WFMY GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Triad community came together in a powerful show of support to honor fallen Greensboro Officer Michael Horan.
On Sunday morning, dozens of riders hit the road for a memorial ride across the city, paying tribute to the officer’s sacrifice. Organized by Operation Fly Our Flag, the event drew a large and heartfelt turnout.
The ride began near the Greensboro Complex and ended at Kickback Jack’s on Battleground Avenue.
WFMY News 2 spoke with several participants and organizers, all moved by the overwhelming support from the community.
Nathan Sheppard, president and founder of Operation Fly Our Flag, said the ride shows the community’s commitment to Officer Horan’s family.
"It's really heart-wrenching, but the bright side of it is whenever we have these events, to see the amount of turnout that comes out to say we appreciate Officer Horan's sacrifice and we're here for the family,” Sheppard said.
Brian Correll, a Salisbury resident, said the event brought many people from across the state together.
“It makes a warm feeling inside to know that everyone is here to support a good cause and to help show support for not only Neil and his group, but for the family and their friends and law enforcement of Greensboro,” Correll said.
Lindsay LiCausi, founder and CEO of Back the Blue NC, Inc., shared that the event held special meaning for her, especially as it neared the anniversary of Sgt. Dale Nix’s passing.
“To come out here today to honor Officer Horan was especially important, especially just being at his funeral, and that also coming on the tail end of a year anniversary of Sgt. Nix's death here in Greensboro Police as well,” LiCausi said.
It was $20 to get a memorial sticker, which you needed to participate in the ride. All the money raised is going directly to Officer Horan's family.
