Just days after Greensboro police Officer Michael Horan was killed in the line of duty, there has been an outpouring of support from community members and organizations across North Carolina.

One of those organizations is Back the Blue NC, Inc., which was founded in 2020 as a way to unite people behind law enforcement. It soon shifted to assisting families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty and has been doing so ever since.

The nonprofit organization’s founder and CEO, Lindsay LiCausi is a former police deputy and detective. She said when a law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty, the impact is widespread.

“In law enforcement, we consider ourselves a family as a whole. We are the thin blue line. We are all brothers and sisters,” she said. “So whether the line of duty death occurs in North Carolina or another state, the whole country as a whole feels it.”

LiCausi said losing a well-loved officer like Horan is especially hard this time of year.

“It's very upsetting, especially around the holiday time,” she said. “The day before we lost Officer Horan was the three-year anniversary of the loss of Officer Mia Goodwin in Charlotte, who was also a parent and left behind three children. And then it's also coming on the coattails of Greensboro's other Sgt. Philip Nix.”

Back the Blue NC helps families through crowdsourced fundraisers and by honoring the fallen officer’s memory. Instead of creating their own fundraiser, LiCausi said Back the Blue is encouraging people to donate to the Greensboro Police Officers Association’s online HelpAHero fundraiser to avoid confusion.

However, she says if you can’t donate online, you can send a check to Back the Blue NC, Inc.

LiCausi said donations help families by taking the financial burden off families during their time of grief. She says there are other ways to help by contributing to memorials and by supporting law enforcement.

“For other community members who are impacted in an event like this, keep going out and thanking our officers, literally a ‘thank you’ goes a long way," LiCausi said.
